The August Quilter's Stash Box features a brand-new, unreleased Hoffman California-International Fabric line! Shipping the week of August 22, 2016.
We are so excited to be working with Hoffman fabrics again. For August, we are including a new fabric line that won't become available in quilt shops until September. Over the past year, Hoffman has supported our special Try Me sized box and most recently provided an all-new fabric bundle for the recent Christmas in July Stash Box. (Did you miss the July Stash Box? We have a limited number remaining, and you can purchase it here.)
A Family Business
Walter, Rube and Philip Hoffman
We recently spoke with Hailey Hoffman to learn more about the Hoffman family's company. They have a long history in the fabric industry and continue to expand their product line each year.
Born in 1893, Rube P. Hoffman began working in New York City's Garment District at the age of 14. He spent the next 14 years traveling with an uncle selling boys' clothing to stores from VA to TX. After getting married and serving in the military he settled in Los Angeles. He started Hoffman Woolens, selling wool to department stores. He quickly saw success and became an importer of other fabrics, changing the name of the company to Hoffman California Fabrics, International.
The company has evolved over the years with Rube's sons Philip and Walter each bringing their own special vision and talents to the company.
There are 7 family members active in the company. Hailey's grandfather Walter comes to work daily. Her uncle, mother, cousins and three 4th generation grandchildren all participate in the family business.
While Hailey is Director of Hoffman Home & Lifestyle, a sub-brand of the company, she is primarily focused on fabric design. She is also Director of Event and Trade Shows.
Hailey explained Hoffman Fabric's approach to selecting designers.
We are constantly looking for designers that have a “different” aesthetic. In today’s fabric world, "different" sells and this is what we are looking for. Being the king of digital fabrics, we are always looking for ways to innovate in terms of design and technology. We also have an amazing in-house team of designers that never stop creating.
Quilter's Stash Box has featured Hoffman's Simply Eclectic by Thistlewood Farms designs, and Hailey tells us this has been one of her favorite more recent fabric lines. It was designed by KariAnne Wood of Thistlewood Farms and through their collaboration the two have become dear friends.
Hailey described the Simply Eclectic line:
I think the line represents Hoffman’s and Thistlewood’s sophistication and the eclectic feel of the home. Simply Eclectic had something in it for everyone, and the projects created were soft and classic.
We asked Hailey to tell us more about her preferred elements when selecting and developing fabric lines.
I love being able to mix and match geometrics and flowers and earthy motifs in a way that is coordinated by colors, but not design. I am a huge fan of collections that feel and look good together based on color, but not necessarily because the design motifs are all the same. The eclectic feel is my favorite.
The entire Hoffman family is involved with the design process, and Hailey points out that "Grandpa has the best eye for design." Hailey herself is involved with every product - digital, screen print, and batiks. She even has her own two lines of fabric which will debut this autumn.
Both capture my love for children and the eclectic worlds that I grew up in. The lines will be called Desert Dawn and Summer Punch - one being tailored to boys and one for girls. I am beyond excited and it has been a blast to see the vision come to life!
We wish Hailey and Hoffman Fabrics tremendous success at the fall market.
